For Queers, by queers
The SewQueer community is a place for sewists who identify under the broad queer and trans umbrellas to find connections, resources, and stories about sewing and identity. We exist to celebrate queerness in its many forms and to envision queer futures.
Sewing is Political
At SewQueer, we assert that sewing, clothing, and making are inherently political. Through its materials, sewing connects us to global economies. Through sharing, sewing joins us to friends, family, and community. Through self-presentation, sewing allows us to assert our genders and take up space. SewQueer seeks a more just and equitable future, and as such we do not allow speech that promotes racism, classism, fatphobia, ableism, or right wing political ideology.
Resilience through Difference
Queerness intersects with other aspects of our identities and cannot be removed from it. In centering queer and trans identities, SewQueer recognizes the ways those identities are formed and inflected by race, size, class, ability, ethnicity, and citizenship. We do not require any single way of identifying as queer or trans and do not allow gatekeeping of identity against members. Instead, we seek a coalition of sewists who can imagine many shared presents and futures.
